In January 2026, Karen and Ken sold Making Thyme Kitchen to Kelly Smallegan-Maas and began their well-earned retirement.
What follows is their story.
Twenty years ago, they set out to solve a simple, universal question: what’s for dinner? They wanted something that was good, quick, convenient and not the same old thing. With the support of friends and family, loyal customers, dedicated staff and a strong community of support, they built Making Thyme Kitchen into a sustainable and thriving business.
Today, Making Thyme Kitchen is proudly rooted in its home in the Alger Heights business district, serving customers from across the greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan area. Many of our meals are also shared far beyond, as friends and family from across the country and around the world send the gift of good food to loved ones here at home.

We have built a small, local business serving customers who want to know who makes their food and where their food comes from.
Our success is pretty simple: we work hard, listen to our customers and don’t make anything we won’t eat and enjoy ourselves.

When we started Making Thyme Kitchen we only delivered pre-ordered packages. Over time our offer grew to include retail sales, a deli case of fresh sides and salads, baked goods, and of recent a partnership with Harvest Health Foods to provide them with our fresh products.
Now we deliver every Wednesday in the Grand Rapids area. Our retail store is open five days a week. And our deli case and baked goods selection has grown.
